What are stems cells and how could they help your family

Your tooth may stores your family’s  stem cells  Stem cells can be found in many tissues, they are usually buried deep, they are hard to find and isolate. However with the breakthrough discovery of stem cells in teeth, a readily accessible source can be isolated. Denver Dentists, Dr James DeLapp, Dr. Sarah Parsons and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp announce that stem cells may be collected and stored by you and your family and utilized later if the need is seen.  Our Denver and Highlands Ranch dental office is located at  6660 Timberline Road #130 Highlands Ranch 80130.

Is there current medical treatment available using stem cells?

No… not at this time.  However… much research for various diseases involve treatment that “may” involve stem cell. This new field of medicine most likely will be called “Regenerative Medicine”. Stem cells inf the future may be used for tissue replacement or mitigating the tissue rejection seen in transplants.

Baby teeth are a great source of Stem Cells

Researchers  have found that primary or baby teeth is a great source of stem cells.  There appears to be a large amount of stem cells in permanent teeth as wells as wisdom teeth.  The ideas is to  save these teeth “if” they are eligible to be saved… frozen and stored so they can be recovered at a later date. When you make your childs first dental visit at our Denver dentists… ask about loosing baby teeth and stems cells.

What type of tooth is eligible to be used?

The tooth that can be harvested are one that is in very good condition.  Teeth that have large decay or abscess are NOT eligible for harvesting.  Wisdom teeth and children’s baby teeth may be the most effective donor sites for your stem cells.

Extracted teeth may a good source of stem cells

Living stem cells found within extracted teeth are routinely discarded every day.  Now, the company “ Stem Save” gives your family the opportunity to save these cells for future use in developing medical treatment. Recent and ongoing medical research gives you the opportunity to save these cells for future use in developing medical treatments for your family.

Dental stem cells now and in the future will have tremendous medical benefits and new treatment for common diseases.  By using your own stem cells you can significantly reduce the risk of rejection of the new medical treatments.

Reduce the risks of immunosuppressive drugs

Immunosuppressive drugs are given in medical treatments to reduce the risks of rejection of the tissue.  The side effect of these drugs are numerous and they make your body more susceptible to infections and the like. In addition to reducing rejection risks …. you can reduce or eliminate the use of drugs that weaken you immune system.

Teeth Stem cells are powerful

Further, the stem cells from teeth have been observed in research studies to be among the most powerful stem cells in the human body.  Stem cells from teeth replicate at a faster rate and for a longer period of time than do stem cells harvested from other tissues of the body.

The older your cells are the less effective they are

Stem cells in the human body age over time and their regenerative abilities slow down as we get older.  The earlier in life that your family’s stem cells are secured, the more valuable they will be when they are needed most.

Sedation for root canals

Sedation for root canals in Denver and Highlands Ranch

Fear and anxiety has been shown time and time again to be a barrier for many patients to seek dental care they want to have done.  In many instances this fear has lead to a deterioration of their dental health to the point where extraction of the offending tooth or… a  root canal is the only alternative.  For many patients “minimal” sedation may help get you through the procedure.  For others moderate or deep sedation may be the answer. Currently our Denver and Highlands Ranch sedation dentists are providing sedation dentistry for their patients needing a root canal.  Please call (303) 694-9740 to see if sedation dentistry is for you.

Studies cited by Malamed (2010) indicate that many patients request some type of dental sedation for a root canal. The range of sedation requested ranges from something as simple as nitrous oxide all the way up to general anesthesia in a hospital setting.  The good news is that many (but not all) patients can be effectively treated with either nitrous oxide or “minimal” sedation and local anesthetics

Don’t wait till a tooth hurts to seek care!

Our Denver and Highlands Ranch dental office want you to seek treatment before it becomes an emergency.  As a general rule… the earlier the intervention the greater success and comfort for the procedure. Waiting until the offending tooth to form an abscyss in not recommended. The infection and swelling can become so severe that the only alternative is extraction.

Sedation Dentistry treatment algorithm

Our goal is to use the sedation protocol that will accomplish our task as simply as possible.  As the patient proceeds down the algorithm the more complex the sedation becomes and the general risks increase.  While sedation dentistry is very safe… every attempt should be make to solve you anxiety and fear problem at the lowest level possible.  The algorithm is as follows and includes profound local anesthesia

  • Early intervention with local anesthesia
  • Nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation
  • Oral Sedation (anxiolysis)
  • “Minimal Sedation” with oral medication with our without nitrous oxide/oxygen
  • “Moderate Sedation” “usually with I.V. sedation
  • “Deep Sedation”
  • “General anesthesia” in a hospital setting

Preoperative evaluation

As a general rule of thumb some type of preoperative evaluation needs to be done in order to have any sedation past the nitrous oxide/oxygen level. First the prognosis on the offending tooth needs to be reasonable.  Patient expectations of the sedation level needs to be realistic with the proposed level.  Root canal are successful bu 5-10% of root canals fail so informed consent needs to be given to the patient for both the root canal AND the sedation protocol PRIOR to any sedation administered! General health status of the patient needs to be evaluated an appropriate medical consultations completed.

Rules of Sedation

While these two and “not” the only rules of sedation by any means… these two “rules” are most appropriate.  First you MUST have a driver to take you home and monitor you after  your sedation AND you must not have had anything to eat and drink 6 hour prior to the procedure. Driving while impaired is risky to yourself and to the public in general.  Nausea and vomiting while uncommon can produce significant post operative problems

Sports Dentistry in Denver

Sports dentistry can involve everything from prevention to management of injuries after they have occurred. Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp provide General and Family dental services for patients in the Denver, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Greenwood Village and Denver Tech Center.

Sports Mouth guards

Sports mouth guards especially for Football and Hockey can reduce the risk from numerous injuries. Such injuries can include injuries to the teeth the jaw joint and reducing or mitigating concussions.

Types of sports mouthguards available

There are many different types of sports mouth guardsavailable. Certainly the mouthguards that you pick up at the sports store provide some type of protection. Some have the ability to “boil”   … “temper”… and bite getting a “better” forming mouthguard. Most athletes find that the smaller the guard the more comfortable.

Custom made “Professional mouth guards

Custom made professional mouth guards are what most college and professional athletes wear.  They are produced by taking an impression of your teeth… fabricating a plaster model and then vacu-forming the splint material over the occlusal surfaces.  The material is trimmed for comfort.

Vague dental pain

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Vague Dental Pain

Vague dental pain or diffuse dental pain is the most difficult diagnosis there is in dentistry.  Our Denver Dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp understand that there may be “many” different causes of this pain… some dental and some non-dental.  Treatment of each of these can be completely different ranging from doing no treatment to extraction of a tooth to some type of medical problem

Pain radiating and involving one side of the face

Pain that radiates …diffuse (not isolated) and seems to involve both upper and lower teeth can be difficult to diagnose.  In addition… remember… “God never said you could only have one thing wrong with you at a time”!.  There could be several overlying issues that fail to localize.  Unfortunately … we  end up waiting until the pain isolate so be can be sure to treat the “correct” tooth or issue.

Differential diagnosis Denver Dentistry

A differential diagnosis is our best “guess” in order or priority… i.e. our opinion. It is based on what we see presenting at that particular time. A decade or so ago one patient had a tooth ache and would call to come in.  By the time he got here his tooth ache went away and he could not tell us if it was on the upper or lower tooth. All the teeth tested vital and no teeth or area was suspect.  Months later he called and they symptom had isolated and the tooth needed a root canal.  This vague pain took “months” to isolate.  Our Denver dentists have had numerous patient with vague tooth ache which we could not identify on a Tuesday afternoon but…by Wednesday morning… it become an area we can treat. This vague pain took only  “hours” to isolate.

Medical causes of vague pain in Dentistry

Our Denver dentist had a physician call with pain on his lower jaw.  He was convinced that it was a back molar but despite testing … no dental diagnosis could be identified.  To make a long story short… we referred him to his physician and his jaw pain was “angina” or a heart problem.  One of the many symptoms patients may have is pain to the lower jaw.  Most of the time it is behind the sternum but it can vary.  Vague pain in this case turned out to be medically related related dental pain.

Two dental issues going on at the same time

Another issue is when a tooth is starting to die (as an example) and the patient “clenches and grinds”.  This ends up masking the location and cause of the pain. We cannot identify which tooth that is painful… it is just the whole area hurts because the clenching and grinding muscle are very sore.  Diffuse pain is “frequently”  and at times… is mostly related to clenching and grinding.  The clenching and grinding are making other dental problems. The key is we tell our patient to call us ASAP if the symptoms worsen or… if the pain becomes localized.

Cracked tooth syndrome

Cracked tooth syndrome can be very difficult to diagnose and to treat. Part of the problem is crack may be microscopic at first then… in a matter of hours…become visible (or not). “Simple cracks” (90%) need a crown and the symptoms get better.  Most frequently (but not always) the hallmark of cracked tooth syndrome is pain on chewing and not a dull vague pain that radiates to other areas. In complex cracks (5-10%) the tooth needs either a root canal or in Dr. James DeLapp case… the tooth is extracted.

Time may be needed

Time may be needed in order to determine your source of pain. Knowledge on what the possibilities are can help you help your dentist to the correct diagnosis
