At all times our Denver dentists discuss the possible post operative outcomes from dental treatment and use the words “possible” versus ”probable”. While similar in thought they are used to convey different types of recovery outcomes.
Probable out comes
Probable means most likely When we do a very large dental filling near the nerve the tooth or area is “probably” going to have some degree of discomfort. This could range from very minor discomfort to discomfort needing additional treatment like a root canal or extraction.
Possible outcomes
Similar situation to that described above but now the dental filling is small. While significant dental pain post operative is “possible” it is not ‘probable”. Now when this happens to you after a small filling if feels like it should happened to everyone else but the good new is… it does not. Any treatment by…any dentist… done to you has the” possibility” of some degree of post operative discomfort. Dealing with dental problems early “reduces” the risk of” probable” problems but… problems are still “possible”.

Denver dentists Dr. James and H. Candace DeLapp have just returned from the National meeting og the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. The meeting was held in Las Vegas Nevada and course work involved a variety of subjects involved in the art of dental anesthesiology. Many of the courses and lectures involved the medical history and patient evaluation before ANY type of dentistry be undertaken. Other courses involved the pharmacology of the agents used in dental anesthesiology as well as updates on local anesthesia. In all… approximately 1,000 dentists from all over the courtry attended this meeting.
Dental Sedation may be an indication for some patients
High blood pressure is one of the many different types of medical issues that may be helped with some degree of dental sedation. Stress of just thinking about a dental appointment has the potiential to cause an unsafe increase in blood pressure. Reducing stress with some degree of dental sedation may be recommended by our Denver dentists.
Minimal and Moderate Dental Sedation
There are a number of levels of dental sedation available for patients to choose from. For a vast majority of patients who have some degree of anxiety…. Minimal dental sedationmay offer you some relief. For many… taking an oral pre-medication approximately one hour prior to an appointment “can” offer “some” relief from anxiety. For some patients the oral premedication provides sedation and “may” (or may not) produced varying degree of amnesia. For “others” there is not profound sedation but the patients feels normal and is not as bothered about the dental appointment. Then again… for others a more significant type of dental sedation needs to be investigated.

Our Denver dentist are a Delta Dental Premiere Provider. If you have Delta Dental Premiere Provider Plan you are able to mamimize your dental benefits in our Denver area Dental office. Each dental insurance company has a variety of dental plans available to choose from. Some plans are more comprehensive and other plans provide very basic services.

Less Dental Insurance Plans Pay Less and Cover Less
As a general rule of thumb… the less expensive your plan is to your employer the less types of treatment will be covered. In most instance the year benefit will be less and you may be restricted to a small list of providers. In some dental plans the fees paid to the dental office are heavily discounted and the office finds it difficult to provide custom dental services.
Choose carefully during the benefits season
It seems like the Fall is the time in which employees can switch their benefits plan. Take care to pick a plan that will meet your needs and expectations.

Our Denver sedation dentist has a variety of techniques available for patients who find it difficult to undergo dental treatment. Dental anxietyof varying degree is a common report from many patients and is a chief reason why there is an under served segment in our population… the dental phobic. Denver dentists Dr. James and Candace DeLapp along with Dr. Sarah Parsons may be able to offer you a solution to your dental anxiety.
Types of Sedation Techniques used by our Denver Dentist
There are a variety of techniques used in dental sedation… some are quite simple and some are much more complex. As the complexity increases so does the extent of training as each inherent risks that each patient should be aware of and accept. While exceedingly safe as a general rule, there are rare instances in which patient can become more sedated than planned. Your Denver sedation dentist needs to be properly trained on how to handle these situations. You should consider the technique that allow you to accomplish the dental treatment. The general types of sedation include but are not limited to:
Psycho-sedation (discussion with the patient in a calm reassuring tone etc.)
Oral Pre-medication possibly combined with Nitrous oxide as an example (minimal sedation)
Intravenous Dental Sedation (moderate sedation)
Deep sedation
General Anesthesia in a hospital setting
Denver Oral Dental Sedation ( Minimal Sedation)
One of the most common dental sedation medicine categories is the family of benzodiazopines. Diazepam (Valium) is the most familiar drug in this category. This medication has been used for years for anxiety and sedation. Triazolam another benzodiazepine was approve to be used as a hypnotic in 1982. It has been used in dentistry for some years and has a certain amount of anteograde amnesia. What this means is “many” but not all patients, may not remember all the details of the dental procedure. This has been termed in the general public use as” travelers amnesia”. Not remembering where your hotel is can be a… not so good thing… but not remembering the details of your dental appointment may be a good thing. Triazolam is contraindicated in pregnant females. Do not combine Triazolam with alcohol or other drugs unless approved by your doctor. Operating vehicles or dangerous machinery is also not recommended.

Treatment of tooth sensitivity from exposed root surface.
A recent article in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) discusses dentin sensitivity of teeth and what treatment was most effective. Our Denver dentists Dr. James DeLapp, Dr. H. Candace DeLapp and Dr. Sarah Parsons have used a variety of techniques to reduces tooth discomfort for their patients. The causes of root sensitivity would be another Blog article or more because there are so many reasons why the root exposure. The key is does the tooth sensitivity affect what you eat or drink.
Treatment of dentin sensitivity
In the past some of the treatment of tooth sensitivity included controlling your diet. In this study the participants felt that controlling your diet was the least effective method of “treating” tooth sensitivity. Treatment that was reported to be most effective included:
Gluma desensitizer- a topical agent applied to the root surface
Dura Flor a fluoride gel placed on the dentin of the tooth
Prevident Gel a prescription based desensitizing solution
MI Paste combination of many agents to decrease tooth sensitivity
Tooth Bonding agents
Tooth Sensitivity video
This is a simple video on dentin sensitivity. This video is from Europe and the doctor pronounces dentin as “dentine”
First “try” over the counter teeth desensitizing agents
For “minor” root sensitivity you might want to try some over the counter agents. Sensodyne is most noted product to use. Our strong recommendation is to see a dentist “first” to make sure you tooth sensitivity is not something more serious. Sensitivity from cavities will not respond and are likely to become worse.
